Marguerite Duras
Acabo de terminar los "Cuadernos de la guerra", una serie de textos autobiográficos, duros, terribles, como todo lo que yo he leído hasta ahora. Pero en la desolación hay algo tan real, tan auténtico que la impresión que me ha dejado de es alguien que consigue seguir viviendo porque puede desahogarse en sus cuadernos.

Dos colecciones de ilustraciones botánicas: una clásica (la de la colección Celestino Mutis, de plantas de Colombia y otra contemporánea, la colección Sherwood) que pueden verse ahora mismo en Madrid en una exhibición que se titula: Imágenes del Paraíso. Ese Paraíso donde Cristobal Colón creyó encontrarse en su viaje al Nuevo Mundo.
Ambas son un buen recordatorio del año de la biodiversidad: casi el 80% de la diversidad de especies vegetales se encuentra en dos países (Brasil y Colombia).
En estos trabajos hay una visión tanto científica como artística de la realidad.

Tree of freedom
Algunas de sus obras estuvieron hace pocas semanas en el Jardín Botánico pero estas me han gustado sobre todo por "lo que cuentan" y el efecto de verlas en un día otoñal tan estupendo como el de ayer.
La que se puede ver en la foto se llama "árbol de la libertad" y parece ser que el origen de la idea viene de los troncos de árboles que la gente clavaba en tierra antes de la Revolución francesa y de la Independencia de América para mostrar su descontento con sus gobernantes.
Ayer los madrileños y los que no lo eran disfrutaban del sol y la luz de la mañana entre los árboles de verdad y los de la imaginación de G Onieva.

Premio ilustración
Este año el premio de ilustración que concede el Ministerio de Cultura ha sido para Ana Juan, autora e ilustradora de libros infantiles y cuyos trabajos han aparecido en portadas del New Yorker. Tiene un qué sé yo inquietante que me recuerda a Tim Burton y a Edward Gorey así que habrá que conseguir este Snowhite tan oscuro.

Imágenes de un siglo: hélices y sonrisa
Nos despedimos de él hace unos pocos años pero ha vuelto sin avisar. El siglo XX ha salido a la calle con una exposición al aire libre en el Jardín Botánico de Madrid. Estas 100 fotografías que pertenecen a los archivos de la agencia EFE ya han estado expuestas antes en otras ciudades: Soria, Segovia, Sitges...
Y como el reencuentro (que es emocionante, meláncolico, dramático, curioso, amargo... de todo un poco y para todos los gustos) ha sido tan por sorpresa no he podido hacer fotos a las fotos como hacía todo el mundo a mi alrededor.
Así que tengo que volver, cámara en mano, a ver esta revisión de nuestro pasado colectivo, del de nuestros padres y abuelos y a disfrutar de las imágenes que ya forman parte de nuestra vida y de las que nos impactan porque son de un principio de siglo que no conocimos. Por ejemplo, la que ilustra este post: coquetería y técnica.
Y el Jardín Botánico siempre renueva su magia en una mañana de verano que empieza a saber a otoño.

I am me.

The poem insightfully strikes a chord in all of us because doubts about our self-acceptance and self-esteem is something we all struggle with many times during our life.
Virginia Satir was a noted psychotherapist, known for her approach to family therapy. She wrote this poem when she was working with an angry fifteen-year-old girl who had a lot of questions about herself and what life meant.

Escultores y fotográfos en el Jardín Botánico de Madrid
Aequilibrium puede verse en el Jardín Botánico de Madrid. Son esculturas al aire libre, (de José G. Onieva) , representando figuras que suben complicadas escaleras y flores y árboles de metal, que creo que se mueven con el viento pero hoy hacía una mañana estupenda así que habrá que comprobarlo en otro momento..
También hay un par de exposiciones fotográficas (parte de Photoespaña): la primera se llama Memoriales y presenta imagenes conmovedoras sobre Berlín, Jerusalén y Washington (de los valencianos María Bleda y José María Rosa, que fueron premio Nacional de Fotografía hace un par de años) y otra de un fotografo inglés Southam sobre derrumbamientos de acantilados y pequeños estanques en los bosques.

La de Happy together sonaba muy parecida pero esta escena de la película era tan graciosa que me gusta recordarla así.

La he descubierto en DVD. El pop, rock, soul de los 60 en una emisora pirata que emitía desde un pesquero en el mar del Norte hasta que fue clausurada por el gobierno británico. Los DJs son un auténtico espectáculo y la banda sonora es una joya. Del director de 4 bodas y un funeral y Love, actually. Pero es mucho menos rosa y más irónica. Eleanor de The Turtles ha sido un descubrimiento y otras muchas canciones que recuerdo muy vagamente de haber escuchado en la radio hace muchos años y que entonces no entendía (The letter, por ejemplo) ahora son un regalo.

Think about your grandmother, your mom, or another wise figure in your life. Did she seem to have an other-worldly and/or wise quality? Why were you drawn to this person? Perhaps you felt supported and anchored by the wisdom they seemed to impart. The special wisdom we gain from the wise women in our lives has been beautifully captured by Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen in her book Crones Don’t Whine: Concentrated Wisdom for Juicy Women. It starts off as follows:
To be a crone, you need to let go of what should have been, could have been, might have been. You need to silence the whining in your head that will come out of your mouth next. Whining makes you unable to live in the present, or be good company for anyone – even yourself. Whiners assume they were and are entitled to a different life from the one they have. Whiners do not see that everyone has had a share of the bad things that happen to people. Ungrateful for what they do have, whiners cannot enjoy the present.
P.s. Dr. Bolen defines crone as “an older woman with zest, passions, and soul.” The book has testimonials from Alice Walker, Olympia Dukakis, and Gloria Steinem.
Here are the 13 qualities to cultivate from Crones Don’t Whine.
1. Crones don’t whine. (See “whining” above).
2. Crones are juicy. (See zest, passions, above).
3. Crones have green thumbs. This means crones nurture growth.
4. Crones trust what they know in their bones. Don’t even need to explain this one.
5. Crones meditate in their own fashion. A cup of tea or another quiet moment in daily life.
6. Crones are fierce about what matters to them. Through empathy, women grow more radical as they age.
7. Crones choose the path with heart. Lear from experience and apply past lessons to present choices.
8. Crones speak the truth with compassion. Being truthful and compassionate, instead of superficial.
9. Crones listen to their bodies. Fulfilling both body and psyche brings about a sense of well-being.
10. Crones improvise. There are various incarnations of yourself over time.
11. Crones don’t grovel. “I don’t grovel for approval anymore.”
12. Crones laugh together. No pecking order, just friends and laughter.
13. Crones savor the good in their lives. Not soured by the personal share of suffering. Happy to be alive.
La traducción en castellano del título de este libro es un poco rara: "las brujas no se quejan" y desde la perspectiva de una analista junguiana podemos ver la posibilidadde llevar una vida llena de pasiones, alma y alegría en la llamada edad madura.
Acabo de terminar "Las diosas de la mujer madura" de Jean Shinoda Bolen. A partir de los cincuenta años las mujeres pueden empezar a desarrollar nuevas cualidades (la sabiduria, la risa, la ira, la compasión, la alegría de vivir) personificadas en diosas poco conocidas en la mitología que nos han enseñado: Hécate, Metis, Baubo, Uzume, Kuan Yin, Sofía, Hestia, Shekmet, Kali...

Alicia was afraid of growing up
No creía que nadie fuera capaz de "mejorar" las historias de Lewis Carroll pero Burton se ha atrevido a continuar el sueño de Alicia y de acabar felizmente con sus pesadillas recurrentes en el momento en que ella se atreve a enfrentarse con sus miedos y a ayudar a sus amigos que tienen problemas.
No es una mala elección para el final de una historia que se supone que es para niños pero que vemos muchos "adultos". Me encantó la voz de Alan Rickman (era volver a las pelis de Harry Potter), la reina Blanca, el caballero malvado, el final que es feliz pero abierto a las aventuras y a la acción (ella sigue los consejos de su padre de ser valiente y cumplir sus sueños y le va bien).

El concierto está basado en hechos reales.
–He mezclado dos cosas, sí. La primera es que en el 2001, una falsa orquesta del Bolshoi viajó a Hong Kong para interpretar una obra, pero les pillaron. La segunda es que en los años 80 Brezhnev echó a los músicos judíos de la orquesta rusa y el director, que no era judío, se opuso a ello.
–La idea original fue rodarla en inglés. Dice usted que «por suerte» no fue así. ¿Por qué?
–Me refiero a que fue una suerte rodarla en la lengua original. Los actores rusos hablan en ruso y los franceses, en francés. Si la hubiéramos hecho en inglés, sería más universal, pero me parece que la película necesitaba incluir las dos culturas: Oeste y Este.
–El humor aparece, de nuevo, como salvavidas para tragedia.
–Soy un desesperado muy optimista. ¡Conseguí escapar de la dictadura de Rumanía! Siempre estamos rodeados de tragedias. El humor representa una interrupción, como si fuera un manantial que surge dentro de esa tragedia. Además, la vida solo dura un segundo, así que aprovechemos y llenémosla de humor.
–¿Cómo escapó de la dictadura de Ceauceascu?
–Tenía un grupo de teatro en Rumanía y la policía secreta ya empezaba a interrogarnos. No podía más, así que oficialmente pedí permiso para ir a Israel a visitar a mi abuela, pero el plan era irme y no volver jamás. Mi familia me fue a despedir al aeropuerto. Todos disimulábamos y sonreíamos, pero éramos conscientes de que a lo mejor no nos volvíamos a ver. Mi madre empezó a llorar y se tuvo que encerrar en el baño.
–¿Y si no se hubiera escapado?
–Me habría vuelto loco. ¿Me habría convertido en un traidor, un colaboracionista? No sé…
–Hoy, con la crisis, todo el mundo debate las miserias del capitalismo.
–En El concierto aparecen las dos sociedades. La capitalista, donde el individuo es el rey, un ser egoísta que rompe vínculos. Por otro lado, la comunista, una sociedad en la que el individuo está aplastado.

I was in a ski resort around the time of the Gulf War, and I had my baby in my arms, and I was by myself, and a man came up to me and called me a Commie cunt and then walked into a bar. I was really shaken because of the extremity of his hatred. I followed him into the bar. He basically just kept laughing at me, he identified himself as a Marine - as if that explained things; I mean, I can't believe Marines are that cowardly, and if he felt that strongly I don't know why he wasn't in the Gulf to begin with, which I pointed out. I didn't say anything particularly astute; it wasn't a satisfying confrontation. He was smug and sitting on his barstool making fun of me and I was standing there shaking with a kid in my arms. Why did you follow him into the bar? Because it was important for me to understand that, to not let him be anonymous. That's what distinguishes a creative person from a noncreative person - curiosity. I really think people divide in two classes, people who want to know and people who don't want to know [laughs]. We're in a culture where we're told not to know. Everything tells you don't ask questions. Every moment that you live you're preparing for death in a way, so that right there is creative. You create this entire life, you buy property, you have children - things that would seem to suggest some kind of permanence and control over your life - and in fact you have absolutely none. I guess because death is so frightening, it certainly is for me, you do spend a lot of your time allowing yourself to be lulled into some kind of complacency, and if you try to stay awake, that is a lifetime experience - to stay awake, and see things and not take things for granted. Whereas complacency kills the artistic impulse.

"Have compassion for all sentient beings causing them no unnecessary hurt nor needless harm.
Refrain from needless competitiveness, from contriving for self-advantage and from subjugating others.
When accepting authority over others know also that you accept responsibility for their wellbeing.
Value true friendship and fulfill your obligations rather than striving with egotistical motive.
Seek liberation from the negative passions of hatred, envy, greed and rage, and especially from delusion, deceit and sensory desire.
Learn to let go of that which cannot be owned or which is destroyed by grasping.
Seek the courage to be; defend yourself and your convictions.
Accept transience, the inevitable and the irrevocable.
Know that change exists in everything.
Negate the barriers to your awakening. Discover the positive in the negative and seek a meaningful purpose in what you do.
Be just and honorable. Take pride in what you do rather than being proud of what you have accomplished.
Having humility and respect, give thanks to those from whom you learn or who have otherwise helped you.
Act in harmony with your fellow beings, with nature and with inanimate objects.
Know that a thing or an action which may seem of little value to oneself may be a priceless treasure to another.
Help those who are suffering or disadvantaged and as you yourself become awakened help those who seek to make real their own potential.
Know that there is no shame in questioning.
Be diligent in your practice and on hearing the music of the absolute do not be so foolish as to try to sing its song.
Remember to renew the source in order to retain good health.
Seek neither brilliance nor the void; just think deeply and work hard.
When still, be as the mountain. When in movement be as the dragon riding the wind. Be aware at all times like the tiger, which only seems to sleep and at all times let the mind be like running water.
When you are required to act remember that right motive is essential to right action, just as right thought is essential to right words.
Beware of creating burdens for yourself or others to carry.
Act with necessary distinction being both creative and receptive and transcending subject/object dichotomy.
Know that you are not the center of the universe but learn to put the universe at your center by accepting the instant of your being.
Seek security within yourself rather than in others.
Know that even great worldly wealth and the accumulation of material things are of little worth compared with the priceless treasures: love, peace and the freedom to grow.

Fiesta de la primavera
Bach to Africa
Lambarena es un homenaje a un médico alemán, Albert Scwhetzer (al que se le concedió el premio Nobel de la Paz) que vivió y trabajó muchos años en Gabón y tuvo problemas con el gobierno francés por su defensa de los africanos. Su amor por Bach y por Africa hizo surgir entre los 42 grupos etnicos del Gabón esta fusión de música tradicional y música de Bach. Lambarena es el nombre de la leprosería en la que este hombre trabajó gran parte de su vida y donde quiso ser enterrado.

Pigeon impossible
El responsable del invento se llama Lucas Martell. He visto otro podcast donde cuenta como se le ocurrió la idea y como fue cambiandola a través de muchos guiones sucesivos. Al final era completamente diferente del planteamiento inicial y por eso dice "writing is rewriting".

What is the central passion
of a life?
To please mummy & daddy?
To find a home for their furniture?
To found a family of one's own,
possibly a dynasty?
To fill the world with more books
that have no readers
or books that have too many
& kill
too many trees?
What is the passion
that drives us
as the wind drives
a winged seed?
To reproduce ourselves,
then die?
To meet God once
if only in a dream?
To reach enlightenment
through pain
or pleasure?
Or perhaps just
to question
as I am doing now,
& to teach by questioning. . .
Yes-- this is both passion
& power
enough.

" ¿Quién no echa una mirada al sol cuando atardece?
¿Quién quita sus ojos del cometa cuando estalla?
¿Quién no presta oídos a una campana cuando por algún hecho tañe?
¿Quién puede desoír esa campana cuya música lo traslada fuera de este mundo?
Ningún hombre es una isla entera por sí mismo.
Cada hombre es una pieza del continente, una parte del todo.
Si el mar se lleva una porción de tierra, toda Europa queda disminuida, como si fuera un promontorio, o la casa de uno de tus amigos, o la tuya propia.
Ninguna persona es una isla; la muerte de cualquiera me afecta, porque me encuentro unido a toda la humanidad; por eso, nunca preguntes por quién doblan las campanas; doblan por ti. "
